Happy Monday! I have some fantastic news for you today. Home Depot Canada has generously provided a $500 gift card for one lucky reader to be used in store to update their bathroom. I will fill you in on the deets at the end of this post.
I thought this would be a good opportunity to pretty up my ugly duckling ensuite as well. This is the very embarrassing Before – very basic builder. It has been like this for over 8 years -yikes! Does your bathroom look like this?
I did upgrade the storage with the builder, added an additional sink, deleted the ugly strip lighting that would have been provided and the large mirror. Instead I opted for two oval mirrors with lights above (all from the Home Depot) which I will keep.
So here’s what I’m planning. You know I love wallpaper, so this mustard one will be plastered on all the walls. I’m hoping the wallpaper will take my mind off the floor tiles which I’m not replacing at the moment! (I’m undecided about the colour but have had it hanging in the bathroom for weeks and I do like it.)
The toilet, sinks, knobs and counter are all available at your local Home Depot. (In a separate post, I will give specifics on the other items.) I’m also painting the vanity either black or a greige.
Hopefully this has got you thinking about what you could do with $500 to update your bathroom. Maybe a new water saving toilet? Pretty faucets? Quartz counter? (Of course, you will need a bigger budget for the counter but the $500 would certainly help!)
To enter to win the $500 gift card and a consultation with a local Home Depot associate to renovate your bathroom:
– snap a photo of your bathroom and leave a comment below with a link to your Pinterest account as well as your email address. I will then invite you to Pin your photo to my Home Depot Bathroom Beautification Contest board. I haven’t done a group board before but I think you have to follow me and vice versa. (You have to have a Pinterest account but it is really easy to set up and trust me, once you sign up you will be as addicted as I am.)
– in the comments section of your Pin, please briefly describe what you would do with the $500.
– you will have until Monday, October 28th at 8 am EST to pin your photo to the board. The winner will be chosen at random. Contest is open to everyone across Canada. UPDATE: CONTEST HAS BEEN EXTENDED UNTIL FRIDAY NOVEMBER 1 AT 8 AM EST.
If you have any questions regarding the contest, please leave them in the comments. Good luck!

October 7, 2013I am in desperate need of a little ensuite bathroom makeover! I am currently making due with the “builder’s bathroom” we have (can someone tell me why they put those horrendous vanity lights in homes these days??), but would really love to fancy it up a bit! October 9, 2013Bummer that we’re at the end of our master bathroom reno and already bought everything for it. And we just bought a new toilet for our guest bathroom. Although it could use a new vanity & sink & faucet…. hmmmm!

October 9, 2013Enter Kelly! Odds of winning are good as not many people have entered so far!

October 14, 2013We recently bought a home built in the 1920s that has had some rather unfortunate work done by previous owners. The bathroom tiling job in particular is really, really bad. The tiles in the shower caused a water leak into our kitchen and we are in the process of replacing the kitchen ceiling.
For the short term we’ve had to install a second shower curtain (sad face) on a tension rod that to hang in front of the tiles to save us from further leaking. With a vinyl shower curtain on each side, it’s kind of like a little prison in there! The $500 gift card would go a long way in helping us buy new tiles, grout, caulking etc and get the leak stopped for good!

The bathroom I snapped a picture of needs a major renovation and it is our only bathroom in the house with a tub/shower. There is water damage from a window in the shower area. The fixtures were all original to the house up until 2 weeks ago when the toilet was leaking and had to be replaced. Before we can reno this bathroom, we need to turn our powder room into a full bathroom. I will use the home depot gift card towards a new tub.

My bathroom needs quite a makeover. A new vanity, new faucet, a new shower curtain and mirror would be a good start.
And Home Depot would be the perfect place where to shop. It has almost become my second home !
Thank you so much !
It would be amazing to win !! Let’s dream for 2 seconds !

I love your blog and think this is so much much.
As you can see I am in desperate need of a new WC; I’ m pretty sure that the built-in, tiled magazine racks featured in my bathroom are out of style and need an update.
I already love going to HD and have so many tips for shopping there that we learned when renovating our basement.
Good luck to all of those who enter.

October 25, 2013Hi Vanessa
As a fellow decorator, my bathroom is an embarrassment to say the least. It is the last room in the house we need to do -maybe we left the best (or worst?) for last. lol Here is my pinterest account: http://www.pinterest.com/jefford/boards/.
My bathroom still has the 1960’s lilac tiles ALL OVER THE WALLS and I may have one of the last lilac tubs on the universe. A home depot gift card could definitely get us on our way to renovating this beast of a bathroom!!
Thanks for the opportunity!!

October 25, 2013Hi Vanessa,
This is me on Pinterest: http://www.pinterest.com/30minutes4me/boards/
My house was built in the early 70s and still is pretty original in the main bathroom. Which means and original (chipped and dented) ceramic tub and sink, both of which have lost their lustre and horrid walls and a tub surround. The gift card would go loving toward a new tub – and would speed our time to reno!
Thanks for this opportunity!

October 27, 2013Hi Vanessa,
My name is Maggie. What we need to change in our bathroom is the shower rod – it has started to rust – and we need a new toilet. You have to hold the flush lever until the water swirls on our current toilet. Style-wise we need some art. We also need to replace the window. A gift card would help to accomplish some of these changes.

Wow, what a fantastic contest! Here is the link to my Pinterest account: http://www.pinterest.com/sakoop/boards/
My bathroom seemed to work when it was just my husband and I living in the house. We now have a 30 month old, a 11 month old, and I’m expecting twins! So, we would love to rip out the single sink and add another sink and new fixtures. I would like to repaint with stain blocking paint to hide the water marks, I would love to get rid of the builder’s lighting, and change the windows so they are not constantly covered with condensation. Oh, and lastly I would like to get a new exhaust fan. Whew…just a small list of things to do:)
Thanks for the opportunity.

On the surface my bathroom doesn’t look too bad but once you start to make use of it you quickly find its faults. The blue vinyl floor is showing its age with traffic wear marks from over 15 years of use. The faucet is leaky and the mechanical plug for the sink is broken. The white melamine cabinets have yellowed and are stained. The toilet becomes clogged and needs plunging anytime you put more than 1 square of TP in it. 🙂 We’ve had it inspected and snaked by two different plumbers and they say that it is the design of the toilet. It was an early model of “low flush”. And the tub…. the tub should have been replaced the last time the bathroom was redone (15 yrs ago) BEFORE the tile work but my in-laws owned the house at that time and decided it was just fine. Not so! The tub is original to the house that was built in the 50’s. There is no longer any sort of glaze on the bottom and sides of the bathtub which makes it always look dirty and dingy and will not come clean. To replace it now means having to rip out the tile work…. $500 sure would help bring function and style back to this main floor bathroom that EVERYONE sees.
Thank you
Sabrina S
