Hi there,
{First of all, if you are new here, welcome! I’m so glad you stopped by. I’m an interior decorator living in a suburb of Toronto, Canada with my husband and teenage daughter. Please feel free to browse around and click on my Portfolio to see some other before and afters.}
I am so excited to share my principal bedroom reveal with you today! It’s one of the last rooms in my house to receive attention and I’m thankful that the One Room Challenge exists as it was the impetus for getting this room “done.” I am more than happy with the results and can’t believe I am lucky enough to call this room mine.
Congrats to the other 19 designers/bloggers doing the ORC with me as well as the 150+ guest participants. Before I get to the reason you are here – the photos – a few thank yous. Thanks to Linda at Calling it Home who created this crazy, six week ride called the One Room Challenge. Because of her, hundreds of spaces have been renovated/decorated/updated over the past few years. Thanks to the sponsors and brands who I will link to at the end and thanks to all of you for cheering me on and leaving lovely comments here and on Instagram. If you want to catch up on the previous five posts and my previous two ORC’s, go here. The previous five posts will give you specifics like paint colour and links to specific products used. And last but not least, thanks to my amazing and supportive husband who gives me the freedom to do my decorating thing and goes along with all my design choices.
So, do you remember that Ikea commercial where the various hosts ensure their bedroom door is closed when guests are over (google Ikea Closed Doors.) Well, that was me! No one could set foot in our bedroom – ever! Even to the extent that if Maya and her friends were over and playing games throughout the house, I would always say “remember, to stay out of our bedroom!” Well, now I won’t be anxious if anyone happens to see our bedroom. The best compliment was when one of my friends came over and she said, “This looks like our hotel room in Paris.” That’s the vibe I was going for!
I do love colour and pattern (usually in the form of wallpaper!) but for our bedroom, I really wanted the end result to be restful and pretty. The palette is fairly neutral and there is an abundance of grey but the textures (linen, wool, velvet) keep it from looking and feeling uninteresting.
I will leave words to a minimum and let the photos speak for themselves.
(There is a pin it button on the top right corner of each photo, so feel free to pin away!)
And this is what it looked like a mere five weeks ago:
The major changes were eliminating the popcorn ceiling, installing dark hardwood (love the contrast of dark floors and light walls) and adding the panel moulding and trim – getting the shell right. The wall moulding is what makes the bedroom feel Parisian and will kick any builder basic room like mine up a notch. I also was so over the navy headboard which needed to be lowered and I preferred something curvier. My workroom performed some surgery on her. 🙂
So you can see that the only items I kept were the nightstands, dresser and brass lamps.
Layering the linen drapes with the shutters adds to the warmth of the room and will come in handy during our harsh Canadian winters.
You know I wavered on the pillow fabric, changing my mind from what I originally ordered. This fabric is so us me and 1 yd was all I needed to create this large and beautiful pillow.
I did change the hardware on the dresser but what really elevates this side of the room are the mirror, lamp, the glass closet door and of course, the moulding.
Oh, I painted the portrait in art school years ago and thought she looked perfect on the dresser. She kind of looks like Anne Hathaway!
Rather than hang the art (from Minted) within the panel moulding, I decided to go over it and now I can add on in either direction if I like. Plus I love the way it looks. You can see links to the art in this post.
A close up of the pretty ceiling fixture from Crystorama with the combination of brass and lucite.
And the closet…life changing!
If the wallpaper looks familiar, it’s because it’s the same one I used in my kitchen! The back of the closet needed something and I didn’t want the permanence of papering the entire back wall. I had a roll of this leftover from the kitchen and I think just this small amount, elevates the closet.
Neutrals on the left, prints and summer clothes on the right. And the most adorable light fixture from Crystorama.
This is the Metrie glass door which I absolutely love:
And this is the entry way to our bedroom. I decided to lean the large print from Minted rather than hanging it.

Thank you for following along! xoxo
All “After” photos were taken by the lovely and talented Stephani Buchman.
A big thank you to my generous ORC partners for providing key elements of the design. I have also noted some of my favourite brands below and appreciate that some of them worked within my tight timelines and budget. Without them, I wouldn’t have achieved this end result which looks even better in person and just like the Ikea commercial, I do a double take when I walk by.

Art: Minted | Mirror: Bassett Mirror Company | Ceiling fixtures: Crystorama

November 13, 2015I saw a couple photos of your space on reveal day, but I was busy finishing up my own room to reveal the following day, so I waited until this weekend to read your whole post and ogle the pretty photos. All I can say is WOW.
At first it was the gorgeous simplicity that struck me. The headboard, in particular, is calling out to be caressed. But as I look further, it’s not that the room is simple, but that it’s well-thought-through and well-edited. And the molding just really took it up a notch. I love everything. Another ORC you knocked out of the park!

November 29, 2015Beautiful room. We’re in the process of doing our master bedroom too (which no one is allowed in) and I’m having a hard time finding a dresser and nightstands. You linked your nightstands to Geovin but do you know the model name by chance? We’re in the GTA so hoping they’re not too far away.

January 5, 2016Hello, love your room it looks so inviting! Was wondering how you installed the artwork over the molding? Did you have to put spacers behind some of the prints? I just installed this type of wainscoting in my dining room and have a big picture I want to put up but it doesn’t fit inside the panels. Any help would be great! Thanks,
Kim

December 27, 2016Hi Vanessa…love everything about your room! I’m selecting some artwork from minted and wondering what is the size of the print “As You Are”? Either print or frame size will be a big help in determining what sizes I should be ordering. Of course the scale of your gallery is perfection. Thanks in advance and a belated Merry Christmas to you and your sweet daughter!

April 13, 2017This is one of the most beautiful bedrooms I’ve ever seen. I love your closet too and those beautiful white lacy blouses. If I was wealthy I’d fly all the way to California to do my whole house. I can’t wait to see your office when it’s finished.
Happy Easter, Rita
