Hello,
{For those of you visiting for the first time, welcome! Thanks for stopping by. I am an Interior Decorator living just outside of Toronto, Canada and I began writing my blog Decor Happy back in 2009. I recently moved into a much smaller home which I am transforming one space at a time.}
Welcome to week 5 of the One Room Challenge! I am transforming my home office into what I hope will be a more efficient space for creating and working.
You can see the before photos and inspiration (week 1), the design plan (week 2) and progress (week 3 and 4) here:
Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4
As I have mentioned, the major part of the office design is the built in which will run 10′ along one wall. I don’t have any progress shots of that so you will have to come back next Thursday to see the reveal. I have been assured that it will be installed tomorrow and my cabinetmaker has not let me down yet.
I drove to the border and picked up this office chair from West Elm. A few people had asked how that works when I posted this photo on my Instagram story. I basically went to the Lewiston UPS site and created a US address to have it sent to. I made the 3 hour return trip, paid 13% duty and was able to get the chair during the ORC timeframe. I just love the brass base, the fact that it is upholstered and has arms. It also swivels and can be adjusted up or down.
The large scale framed art “The Typewriter” from Minted arrived and I couldn’t be happier. I only have one 46″ w wall to hang art when the built-in goes in and a large scale print is perfect for this area. Does anyone remember taking typing in high school or am I dating myself? 🙂
The large basket is from another cross border trip to Target.
I decided to go with matte black hardware from Top knobs again – similar to my kitchen. I had considered using brass but the chair base and light fixture are brass. Not to mention that there are 12 drawers so thought that would be a bit much if they were all in brass. The cup pulls will basically disappear on the dark blue green cabinetry. Here’s what I am using:
Bergen knob (2), Kingsbridge pull (2), Channing cup pull (12)
And my Annie Selke’s Dash & Albert rug was delivered and Ellie couldn’t wait to lie down on it – another napping spot! I have been using these rugs for years especially the indoor/outdoor ones like this. They are perfect as a runner in the kitchen or bath and are great if you have pets – so easy to clean. (Yes, Ellie does need a trip to the groomer. She just had her last set of shots, so I can now take her. Even the vet this week, couldn’t safely cut the fur around her eyes.)
Here is what needs to get done before next Monday when my photographer arrives:
- Hang the light fixture.
- Install the built in.
- Hang art
- Shop for accessories and style.
- Get the room professionally photographed.
This ORC has been one of the simplest of the five that I have taken part in. I can’t believe some of the massive undertakings that are happening. Go check out what the 20 featured designers and my fellow linkers are up to. Thank you Linda for organizing the ORC, House Beautiful for being a partner and all of you for following along!
