Hi there,
{If you are new here, welcome! I’m an Interior Decorator living in Milton, ON, just outside of Toronto.}
Welcome to week 4 of the One Room Challenge where I am renovating and decorating my basement and documenting the process in six seven weekly blog posts. This is my 7th and most challenging ORC to date. The previous ORC’s (linked to at the end of the post) went pretty smoothly all in all. In all fairness, this is a renovation involving building walls and construction. I won’t go into too much detail about the issues I have encountered for fear of sounding like a whiner when there are much more important things to worry about in life, right?
In previous posts, I have shared the Before photos of the space and inspiration photos, the floor plan and design concept and (slow) progress. You can catch up on those posts here:
Again, I tweaked the design a little from last week. I removed the poufs which were out of stock and added in the floor lamp, hardware and dining chair which I already have as I think they would be perfect in the space. Here is the revised design concept so you can see the direction I’m going:
This beautiful etching arrived from Darlene Cole and I cannot wait to hang it in the basement. I’m pretty sure it will go at the bottom of the stairs and will be the first thing you see as you enter the basement. Follow her on Instagram to see more of her beautiful work.
My cabinet pulls arrived from Top Knobs and I couldn’t wait to see how the honey bronze finish looked on the black cabinetry. I have always loved black cabinetry but couldn’t commit to it in my kitchen but happy to have a small kitchenette with this finish in the basement:
And I inspected the sectional from Whittington’s in the JF Fabrics Crypton fabric. It not only is beautiful but so comfortable and I cannot wait to get it into the space. I mentioned in a previous post that I chose Whittington’s because of the quality of their furniture. I own a few of their pieces already and they have held up extremely well over the past 12 years. As they say, when you pay for quality, you only pay once.
I knew I wanted as large of a sectional as I could fit to maximize seating. The sectional is 109″x 109″ and can fit maybe eight to ten people I’m guessing. I love Whittington’s custom sectional program where you can choose the seating, arm style, leg etc. As you can see I chose a “slim track arm” because I wanted to maximize seating and not lose it to a wide arm. I also chose top stitching as opposed to a welt which to my eye looks a bit more traditional and formal. I think top stitching looks more relaxed. I will share more about their workmanship and the custom program in a future blog post.
Isn’t she gorgeous? Love!
Progress:
Last week I said I would have much more to show you this week but unfortunately I don’t. It’s the usual delays which happen during renovations so always build in a time buffer. Here’s where we are at:
I won’t list what needs to be done as that list is very long!
Go check out what everyone else is up to – many are pretty much finished their spaces although they are simple, decorating projects not construction. So jealous!

October 26, 2017sorry to hear that things have been delayed and you aren’t as far along as you hoped…it’s tough to have the reno completed in 6 weeks anyway. Hope everything works out as promised and it will be wrapped up by the end of next week. Since we have one extra week this go around, fingers crossed it all works out in the end.
I so want to try that sofa … it does look amazingly comfortable. What did you tweak in the design plan? liking your floor lamp …

October 26, 2017Wrapping it up by the end of next week has always been the goal. I couldn’t change my photographer’s date as she is fully booked and I just want to get this done.
It is SO comfortable Tim – you will have to come over and try it out in person one day.
Yes, I added in the floor lamp. I will revise the post to share what was tweaked – nothing major.
Thanks for your comment and support! Going to check out your progress soon! xo
