Hello,
After much indecision, I have decided to link up to the Spring One Room Challenge (ORC), a biannual event where bloggers/designers transform a space in six (five in actuality) very short weeks. If you follow me on social media, you may have read that my kind, smart and witty husband passed away suddenly eleven days ago. (I really can’t believe I am typing this. We are all heartbroken.) As a result, I wasn’t going to participate as there are so many unknowns at the moment and I didn’t really think I could jump into this so soon. But, I have participated in the past three challenges (first as a linking participant and the last two as one of the 20 designers) and not only was it a great experience but I had a beautiful room at the end. Working on a room in my own home will be a much needed diversion, get me back into work mode and create something beautiful for my daughter Maya – her bedroom. Plus, this won’t be a drastic change as seen in my kitchen, Maya’s bathroom or my bedroom so I’m hoping the subtle changes will come off without a hitch – famous last words, right? Go here to read all of my ORC posts and see what this is all about.

Below are the “Befores”and I know you are probably thinking that there is nothing wrong with this room. In fact, these photos appeared in Style at Home magazine in 2012 so it was probably last updated in 2011. But for the past few months, Maya has been wanting to change the pink paint colour in her room and eliminate all the colour and pattern to create something more restful and grown up. She is going to be 14 in a few months and was probably 9 when this room was last done.

And here are some additional inspiration images:
The inspiration gives a good idea of the direction we are going in – clean, simple and minimal pattern – just perfect for a bedroom. There are a lot of decisions to make stat as I wasn’t going to participate until early this morning. Fingers crossed, it all comes together. I will share the concept and changes to be made with you next week. In the meantime, check out what all my fellow linking participants are up to here. And thanks Linda for once again organizing the ORC!

April 7, 2016I was saddened to learn about your husband’s passing on Instagram. Having lost my father suddenly back in November, I can certainly relate to how you feel and what you are going through. Don’t hesitate to lean on your loved ones for support – I found that really helped me. Please reach out if you would like to chat. I’ve always loved your relaxed elegance vibe so I am sure Maya’s bedroom is going to be sensational.

April 7, 2016I’m still heartbroken for you and Maya, Vanessa 🙁 This sounds like something good to focus on. I love that you and Maya are doing it together. How can she be 14 already? Your plan looks beautiful and restful and hopefully will bring you both comfort and peace in the days ahead.

April 7, 2016Dear Vanessa – I am so sorry to hear about the sudden loss of your husband. I was in that same place eight years ago and want you to know that you are doing the right thing. It’s important that in the months ahead you pamper yourself and only do what you really want to do. Working on my home was a huge part of getting through those early days. Grieving is hard work – and I pray that you come out the other side stronger just as I have.

April 8, 2016Vanessa, my heart broke for you and Maya when I heard the news of your loss. I’m very glad you made the decision to join this round of the ORC because I think it will be a welcome distraction and something else to put your focus on. And also it’s important at this time to not shut the world out and to continue doing the things you love. I know I speak for many others when I say that you’ve got a strong support network here in the blogging community. xo
Love the inspiration for your daughter’s room, it’s going to be a gorgeous transformation. 🙂

April 9, 2016I am so incredibly sorry to hear about your incredible loss, for you and your sweet daughter. I agree with you and all the other commenters that this will hopefully be a good thing to focus on. Sometimes in the middle of life’s greatest tragedies we need a distraction. I’ll be thinking of you and your family.
Looking forward to following your progress – the room is gorgeous now, but I’m sure your daughter will appreciate an updated “grown up” space.
