#MarsDIY Challenge

If you follow me on Instagram, you may recall that I spent a fun and rewarding day participating in the Mars Bar Canada #MarsDIY challenge. It was all about getting creative, having fun, rewarding yourself and not being afraid to “bite off more than you can chew.”

Since I wouldn’t call myself a DIYer, I invited my talented and creative friend Becky Freeman to join me. Two heads are always better than one, right? The purpose of the challenge was to DIY/build a table with the supplied materials and tools within three hours.

When we arrived, we had a quick moment to look at all the supplied materials to decide what type of table we would make and what tools we would use.  Some of the supplies were a little out there/silly which you will see in the video.

We immediately spotted sheets of plywood perfect for a large, square coffee table. After trying to glue two sheets together which didn’t adhere, and realizing the legs we chose would look too small, we decided to revise our vision and opted to make a smaller table – either for a small space or a child’s playroom. That’s the beauty of a DIY – you can create as you go and it’s A-OK to make mistakes along the way. We added details like “mod podging” pages of a dictionary in a herringbone pattern to the top, adding extra wood around the table top to make it look more substantial and adding decals and twine to finish it off.

I’m not sure why I decided to wear a white blouse when I knew I would be DIYing. Needless to say, by the end of the challenge my white blouse was tinged with wood stain! Of course, Becky who also wore a white shirt (unplanned) was stain free.

We laughed a lot during the day – at our mishaps and just in general while scheming and creating. DIY’s can’t be taken too seriously and often turn out best when you have fun with it.

We thought our table turned out great, had fun along the way and were happy to reward ourselves with a Mars bar (or two) during the process and when we were done.

The other talented people involved were Scott McGillivray and his brother, Christine from Amidst the Chaos and her husband, and Sarah Couture and her partner. I absolutely enjoyed DIYing along side them and getting to know them. The creativity in the room was palpable.

Everyone worked well together, encouraged each other and helped each other out. When Sarah couldn’t attach the large, furry legs to her table, Scott and his brother stepped in to help. She certainly “bit off more than she could chew” and was ultimately the winner of the challenge.

After the Challenge, it was fun to share Mars bars with everyone. Maya, my teenage daughter, would take a number to school everyday for her friends and if someone was feeling down, she would pull out a Mars bar and that would instantly make them smile. Chocolate has a way of doing that, right?
