It’s Wednesday again and that means it’s time for my weekly One Room Challenge update. Thanks to Linda, designers and design bloggers across North America and beyond are transforming a space in just six weeks and sharing their journey in weekly blog updates. We are now halfway through with the final reveal three weeks from today! You can catch up on my previous two posts here: Week 1 and Week 2.
I am participating with these lovely ladies below (links are at the bottom of the post) as part of the core group of 20 designers/bloggers. And over 150 bloggers “linked up” during the first week!
I am prettying up my almost teenage daughter’s ho-hum builder’s bathroom. It’s not a total gut reno but I’m still replacing the floor tile, painting the vanity, changing the counter, faucet, sink, hardware, mirror, lighting etc.
The bathroom still looks like how it does in the Before photos (see Week1.) Everything is lined up to go but my tiler isn’t coming until next week and after that, the painting, wallpaper hanging etc. will happen lickety split.
The counter template is happening today with the install being next Monday. I chose Caesarstone’s Organic White quartz. I didn’t want a pattern on the counter because of the bold wallpaper and the slight pattern on the hex floor tiles. Here’s the latest design choices (which may change by week 6!)
So, let’s talk about that floor tile, shall we? I went back and forth between a more expensive marble hexagon and a more cost effective large black hex in porcelain. I definitely knew I wanted hex and didn’t waiver on that! I used it years ago in this bathroom (see below but this is the 1″ hex in Carrara) and vowed one day that I would have it too.
I really want some airiness and a bit of a luxe factor in the bathroom, so I opted for a 2″ hex in Oriental White in the end. This marble in this size costs the same as Carrara with Calacutta being a little more expensive (but of course, it depends on your supplier.) Carrara is predominantly grey whereas the Oriental White is light overall with shades of grey and even a light sage green. (I love Calacutta but it has more dramatic veining and is the most colourful of the marble choices I had which I thought would be too much with my “loud” wallpaper.)
I decided to play off the lovely green shade in the floor tile by having custom floor to ceiling shower curtains made in a beautiful linen (the lighter shade shown above) from one of our generous sponsors, Loom Decor. I know I had mentioned mint green in my last post and even considered the designer favourite – black, white and kelly green especially when I came across this image via Pinterest. How stunning is the floor to ceiling shower curtain?
Again, I thought it was too bold a choice of colour with the wallpaper and decided the light sage green drapes would add a hint of colour without competing. And all along, my preference was to have the vanity painted black. However, now I’m thinking that green (similar to the middle colour above and darker than the drapery fabric) may be the way to go. It would add some interest to an all black and white scheme. I still have time to make that decision!
Here’s what still needs to be done:
1) old floor tiles removed and new tiles installed
2) remove old counter and arrange for quartz counter template and install
3) plumber to install new faucet and new toilet
4) remove large mirror and do drywall repair
5) hang wallpaper and new mirror
6) paint walls
7) have vanity painted and install new hardware
8) electrician to install new sconces
9) hang new shower curtains, hang art, install new towel hooks and style everything pretty
10) photo shoot
I’m a little worried but I’m sure it will all come together in the end!
