Hi there,
If you are new here, welcome. I’m an Interior Decorator living in Milton, ON (Canada) sharing my work and inspiration on the blog (when I can 🙂 ) Follow me on Instagram here to find out more about me – snippets from my life and work.
This is week two of the One Room Challenge, where 20 designers/bloggers transform a space in six weeks and anyone can link up. The reveal post will be up in exactly four weeks from today so a lot needs to happen pronto.
Go here to see the first post including Before photos of my daughter’s bedroom which is the room under construction/decoration. As I mentioned, we are keeping the main pieces like her bookcase, dresser and nightstand/desk. The main impetus for updating her bedroom is that she really didn’t like the faint pink paint colour on the walls any longer. It was probably this colour for at least 5 years and now that she is almost 14, it doesn’t fit her particular tastes any more. So we are going with a light grey on the walls (have a few contenders but still to be decided) and then a slightly darker grey on the back of her bookcase and her nightstand/desk.
Rather than just painting the walls grey and leaving it at that (which she would have been perfectly fine with), I thought we may as well make some other changes and chronicle it for the ORC. And planning this makeover with my daughter has been a shimmer of joy during these dark, sad days (see my Week One post.) Below is the inspiration board:
And this is the Before. As someone mentioned on Instagram, this looks like an “After” and that’s because it was shot for Style at Home magazine in 2012.
As in the inspiration images I shared last week, we are going with a black and white scheme, with a little green thrown in (similar to her bathroom.) Because white is an impractical colour for the headboard fabric or area rug – these are of a cream/linen shade. She really doesn’t want a lot of pattern and colour in her room any longer. So here are the changes we are making:
- white bedding – to be sourced.
- one floral pillow – have to have floral somewhere in a space, right? I have used this fabric before with clients and love it. Schumacher via Decorator’s Best.
- wool area rug – same one as in my bedroom but in a cream colour. (I had borrowed the one above for the shoot.)
- art from my go to resource – Minted. The Palm one for sure and some others to be decided.
- the black bench will sit at the foot of her bed. There is beauty in its simplicity and I adore all the products that this local manufacturer handcrafts. Plus they are a joy to deal with. #shoplocal
- and just like the headboard in my bedroom, her headboard shape is being transformed. It is being reupholstered in the neutral linen look fabric from JF Fabrics which looks slightly different than the colour shown on screen.
- replace her “girly”chandelier with this more grown up fixture. I have a small, gold version in my bedroom but I just love the matte white version.
Please note that I am selling the ceiling fixture, chair, drapes and large framed photo on the right so email me if interested: decorhappy@gmail.com.
I am typing this to the sound of sanding happening in her bedroom. Just like in my bedroom, I am having someone (a sweet friend) remove the ugly popcorn ceiling to reveal the smooth ceiling underneath. That makes such a difference and I recommend that everyone do this, if they can. Painting will happen next week and that’s it for any real construction happening – the rest is decorating.
Thanks for following along and don’t forget to check out what all my fellow linking participants are up to here. And thanks Linda for once again organizing the ORC. Have a wonderful week!
(And thanks again for all your support in person, via texts/emails and on social media during this difficult time.)

April 15, 2016It’s a beautiful room, such a perfect pink. But I totally understand her wanting to change things up and go in a more sophisticated direction. Love the plan. xo
