One Room Challenge Week 5 – Fall 2017

{If you are new here, welcome! I’m an Interior Decorator living in Milton, ON, just outside of Toronto.}

Welcome to week 5 of the One Room Challenge where I am renovating and decorating my basement and documenting the process in six seven weekly blog posts. Traditionally, ORC participants have five weeks to complete their space (six blog posts) but because of the various natural disasters happening in the US impacting projects, Linda, the organizer has decided for the first time ever to give all of us a one week extension. I am very happy about this as for the first time after completing six ORC’s, I wouldn’t have finished on time. Things happened (or didn’t happen) beyond my control. Although I do want to wrap this up sooner than later as it has been six weeks since construction began, good to know we have early next week to finish. My contractor and team will be back this week for one day to get everything finished and I will use the rest of the time to bring all the furniture and accessories in. My photographer is shooting the space on the 13th now and the reveal will be on the 16th.

Showroom visit and pick up: I picked up my handmade brass track from 1925 Workbench and although I had briefly met the owners at the Interior Design Show in 2015, it was nice to really meet them and see their workspace/showroom. What a talented duo! This is one half of the husband and wife team – My Le. Love this door they designed and built with glass panes that open. :

A fail: I ordered two of these wall sconces for above the kitchen cabinetry and I didn’t realize they were 10″ wide. Or maybe I read the 10″ and didn’t realize how big they would be.  You can see just how large they are below beside the wall sconce in my ensuite which is a more appropriate size.  They are huge especially for above the cabinets in my basement with a low ceiling height and a bulkhead. I think in a space with 9′ or taller ceilings, they would look fabulous. So now I have to ship them back to the US. I have ordered a smaller sconce from the same retailer – thank goodness for “Quick Ship” options!

Progress:

It has been all hands on deck this past week as we near the finish line. As of last Friday pm, this is where we are:

The Korlok by Karndean floor was installed and I couldn’t love it any more. You would be hard pressed to tell that it’s vinyl. Looks so authentic. You can read about all of the benefits of this product in this post. In a nutshell, vinyl is one of the best products for basement flooring.

You can also see the Metrie baseboard and shoe moulding (I used door stop rather than quarter round) that were installed. In basements with uneven floors, finishing the baseboard with trim hides gaps.

The framing for the Dimplex IgniteXL® 50″ Linear Electric Fireplace was completed. It sits on wall mounted Ikea cabinets. The TV will be mounted to the left of it. I am not a fan of a TV over a fireplace as the TV would be mounted too high plus the scale can be off. The fireplace needs to be wider than the TV in this situation. Optimal viewing for a TV is eye level when you are seated so roughly around 46″ to the center of the TV for the average person.

I initially didn’t think I would have space in the basement for a fireplace but when I saw these linear ones from Dimplex which are very narrow, I knew it would work. They come in three lengths and this one is the smallest at 50″. I think it will add not only warmth which is much needed in a basement but visual interest.

Here it is dry walled in but yet to be painted. We lined it up with the edge of the window.

Here is what needs to get done by the contractor/trades in the next few days:

• hang wallpaper
• paint shelving in storage area
• painting/touch ups
• install two Metrie Logan doors
• install three Metrie Pretty Simple doors joined together on a track; install the door handles
• hang TV
• install carpet on stairs
• finish kitchen cabinetry install including hardware
• place all lighting on dimmers
• clear coat or stain the wood top on the media unit
• install gym mirrors

Here’s what I need to do:

• pick up TV
• pick up pillows
• purchase items for gym area
• load all furniture and accessories in (plus bike and system for gym)
• pick up flowers
• hang art
• style everything pretty!
