I\u2019m so happy to have Scott McGillivray<\/a> on the blog today answering questions about his background, his popular show Income Property<\/a> and his former life in a boy band.  You read it here first!<\/p>\n

On Income Property, Scott shares his extensive knowledge of real estate investing to generate income (he owns over 100 properties, half in the US.)  This season, Income Property expands to a one hour format to show the house search as well as the renovation.  (Previous seasons focussed on creating a rental unit within the homeowner\u2019s existing residence.)  His renovation expertise comes from having been involved in almost 250 renovations over the course of 10+ years. <\/p>\n

1) Tell us a bit about your background. When did you begin buying and renovating income properties? How did that lead to Income Property? <\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cI started in college. I purchased my first house with a friend as students.  We were going to be without a home because we couldn\u2019t find anything to rent. A friend who is a real estate agent said that the rental market is really saturated and we would be better off buying than renting. We didn\u2019t take it seriously until we started crunching the numbers.
We ended up buying a place, fixing it up, living there and renting out a portion. Loved the business model and so we did it again the next year and started buying multiple properties, renovating them and turned it into a full time business. After four or five years of doing that, the biggest struggle was finding responsible trades. I was a carpenter by trade and loved doing the work so I decided to become a licensed contractor and manage my own crews.
Another friend worked in TV and asked if I would be interested in doing a gig. I didn\u2019t know anything about TV but I gave it a try – did some work for Debbie Travis\u2019 Facelift. Met people in TV, told them what I do, they said \u201cthere\u2019s a different idea \u2013 can you do that for homeowners? Do you want to host a show?\u201d Not really but it sounded interesting and I like to try new things and it worked out well.\u201d<\/p>\n
