{"id":1952,"date":"2010-10-27T05:23:00","date_gmt":"2010-10-27T05:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vanessafrancis.com\/staging\/work-in-progress-updating-traditional\/"},"modified":"2010-10-27T05:23:00","modified_gmt":"2010-10-27T05:23:00","slug":"work-in-progress-updating-traditional","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vanessafrancis.com\/staging\/2010\/10\/work-in-progress-updating-traditional\/","title":{"rendered":"Work in Progress: Updating Traditional"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I recently mentioned, I am starting a new series on Wednesdays entitled Work in Progress.&nbsp; The thought behind it is to see how designers\/decorators\/bloggers go about making decorating decisions within their own home or a client\u2019s.&nbsp; I think it is inspiring to see Before and Afters but the \u201cduring\u201d process can be informative as well.&nbsp; Seeing&nbsp; how other designers approach a project, handle any design problems, decide on layout and colour schemes are some of the areas I\u2019m hoping will be covered.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Once the project is completed, I will share the \u201cAfter\u201d photos.<\/p>\n<p>I have a few talented blog friends lined up to share their projects with you in the weeks ahead.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m kicking off the series with with a look into a project I am currently working on. This project seems to be typical of ones that have been coming my way lately.&nbsp; Clients contact me because they know that something is not quite working in a room and\/or they want to finish it off.&nbsp; This could mean swapping out furniture or adding an area rug, accessories or art.<\/p>\n<p>I am working with this amazing client to tweak a couple of rooms in her beautiful home.&nbsp; This is how her living room looked not long ago.&nbsp; She has a family room where the TV is located.&nbsp; This is more of her entertaining space.&nbsp; She wants to keep her sofa because it is in great condition and is excellent quality.&nbsp; Down the road, I can see it being reupholstered in a linen with maybe some tufting on the back.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_Pp-4J9vThO8\/TMe3U-CieJI\/AAAAAAAADLk\/GOCNpyM_s1k\/s1600-h\/livingbefore%5B3%5D.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"livingbefore\" border=\"0\" height=\"484\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_Pp-4J9vThO8\/TMe3V3luSjI\/AAAAAAAADLo\/fI3ZbV6HdvY\/livingbefore_thumb%5B1%5D.jpg?imgmax=800\" style=\"border-width: 0px; display: inline;\" title=\"livingbefore\" width=\"644\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So as you can see from the Before photo, this room is seriously lacking some je ne sais quoi (did I really write that?)&nbsp; This is one side of a combined living\/dining room.&nbsp; You can see how small the room is because the dining room chair is peeking out in the left side of the photo.&nbsp; The only thing we are adding on the dining room side is art.&nbsp; She doesn\u2019t like her dining room \u201cset\u201d but replacing it is not in the budget right now.&nbsp; I\u2019m trying to convince her to do a series of black and whites of her travel photos to fill in the wall on the left side of the room.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m sure you can spot some of the trouble areas in the living room above:<br \/>&#8211; flooring which has a prominent orangey red undertone \u2013 need to make this disappear<br \/>&#8211; mismatched lamps<br \/>&#8211; chair which is out of scale with the size of the room.&nbsp; The other chair is sitting all by itself in a corner near the kitchen.<br \/>-lack of artwork and colour<\/p>\n<p>So, here\u2019s what I have proposed.&nbsp; <span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">(I was trying to do this all designerish for you using Olioboard but had trouble uploading my photos.)<\/span><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_Pp-4J9vThO8\/TMe3XFvZOkI\/AAAAAAAADLs\/-ArvalXvzYM\/s1600-h\/moodboard%5B5%5D.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"moodboard\" border=\"0\" height=\"605\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAHoAAAB6CAQAAADaUI9vAAAAi0lEQVR42u3PAQEAAAABIP6fNkQ9qDlUaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWlpaWnpFwODAQB7gWIzIgAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==\" data-src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_Pp-4J9vThO8\/TMe3YppPglI\/AAAAAAAADLw\/OlEWNLJiakY\/moodboard_thumb%5B5%5D.png?imgmax=800\" style=\"border-width: 0px; display: inline;\" title=\"moodboard\" width=\"605\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"moodboard\" border=\"0\" height=\"605\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_Pp-4J9vThO8\/TMe3YppPglI\/AAAAAAAADLw\/OlEWNLJiakY\/moodboard_thumb%5B5%5D.png?imgmax=800\" style=\"border-width: 0px; display: inline;\" title=\"moodboard\" width=\"605\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>The wool area rug with a cotton border has already been installed and has transformed the room significantly.&nbsp; I did a floor plan to ensure the size of the rug was correct.&nbsp; I ran it throughout the entire space to unify the living and dining areas.&nbsp; Keeping it neutral was key as it is quite large.&nbsp; A pattern would have really overwhelmed the small space.<\/p>\n<p>I love the smaller chairs that we chose to replace the overstuffed wing chairs.&nbsp; The gorgeous linen fabric is for throw cushions and for a bench which will reside under a window near the kitchen.&nbsp; Blue is the accent colour as it ties in with the backsplash in the kitchen which is open to this area.<\/p>\n<p>You probably recognize the lamps as they are one of my favourites and I used them <a href=\"http:\/\/decorhappy.blogspot.com\/2010\/05\/from-frumpy-to-fabulous-stylish-first.html\">here<\/a>.&nbsp; My client fell in love with them on a shopping trip even before I mentioned my love for them.&nbsp; The coffee table is in place and the oval shape works so well with the curve in the sofa.&nbsp; The lamps and coffee table are from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crateandbarrel.com\/\">Crate and Barrel<\/a>.&nbsp; I can\u2019t tell you how excited I am that a new store is opening this week only 20 minutes from me!<\/p>\n<p>The dark, modern and rectangular side tables from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elte.com\/\">Elte<\/a> provide contrast with the traditional, curved sofa.
