Hello friends,<\/p>\n

I’m so happy to be able to share Maya’s bedroom makeover with you today. It was fun working with her on this for the One Room Challenge and was a much needed distraction. And it\u00a0 goes to show how simply changing paint colours, fabric and lighting goes a long way.<\/p>\n

Whenever I meet with a new client, I ask them what their goals are and what they are hoping to accomplish by decorating their space. In this case, Maya really just wanted to change the paint colour and eliminate pattern to have a more quiet and grown up room. She was tired of pink in general, although I did manage to sneak it in via art on the bookcase. \ud83d\ude42 She loved the black and white palette in her bathroom<\/a> so we wanted to do the same here but add in some green and white\/cream. I had intended on placing the chair where the palm tree plant is but she really loved the thought of a large plant in her room and this one caught her eye when shopping at Ikea.<\/p>\n

I just love the ceiling fixture from Crystorama<\/a> and how it makes a statement yet still remains quiet because of the matte white finish. It definitely reads as both more sophisticated and edgier than her dainty chandelier that was there before.<\/p>\n

I fell in love with the simple, hand made pieces of Coolican & Company<\/a> at the Interior Design Show last year and knew that their Adelaide bench<\/a> in black oak would be perfect for Maya’s room. I can’t say enough about this company and the two young men who create and run it. Just a pleasure to deal with. You can read about their approach here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Because of her dust allergy and in keeping with a more Scandinavian, minimalist look, we took down her drapes and eliminated a large area rug in favour of a small wool one beside her bed.<\/p>\n

Would you believe this is the same headboard as shown in the Before photo? Staci of Switch Studio<\/a> was able to modify it to eliminate the curve and did a great job reupholstering it. If you are looking to have a piece re-imagined or need an upholstered piece created from scratch, Staci could definitely help you out.<\/p>\n

I just adore the wool blend fabric on the headboard from JF Fabrics, one of my favourite suppliers as fabric is in stock 99.9% of the time. Have to love that. This fabric will grow with her while you could tire of a patterned fabric more quickly.<\/p>\n

Maya took the large photograph while we were on a hike when she was about 10 and she wanted to keep it as it is keeping with her black and white palette. Unfortunately, the art from Minted didn’t arrive in time (as the brass frame on one of the pieces was back ordered) so I used what I already had and may switch things around in the future. The beautiful cloud photo<\/a> over the bed is one of my favourites and this will probably stay here rather than in her bathroom.<\/p>\n

Her room was a simple makeover, compared to the others I have completed for the ORC with no construction other than her ceiling being scraped. I also didn’t use wallpaper (a shocker, I know) or beautiful moulding etc. But, I of course had to use one showstopper floral fabric and this one from Schumacher is a favourite. Thankfully, Maya loved it as much as I did.\u00a0 The pom pom pillows behind are from H&M Home<\/a>, as are a few accessories throughout the room. Maya loved shopping there with me and chose all of the accessories herself.<\/p>\n

I shared this photo on Instagram<\/a> of her vintage desk painted glossy black – what a difference that makes. I wanted to include some memories of her Dad in the room. I have so many photos of the two of them and I found that Maya had taken this one and placed it in a frame on her nightstand. It’s one of my favourites too. Rick is watching her intently as she learns to blow bubbles for the first time.<\/p>\n

I placed his watches (two were his and one was his Dad’s) in a glass box (from H&M Home) as a keepsake. Rick wasn’t into brand names or anything flashy – a simple Timex watch was his preference.<\/p>\n

I kept all of Maya’s furniture except for her chair as they were in good shape. This dresser doubled as her change table when she was a baby and still is a solid piece of furniture to keep. I just changed the hardware to these simple, black ones. The beautiful peonies and succulent are from Fiori Oakville<\/a> – my favourite flower shop with a great selection and the sweetest staff and owners.<\/p>\n

One of the stories that Rick loved to tell was how his high school jazz band was invited to the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland in 1982.\u00a0 They were the only high school band in the festival – the rest were experienced bands and university bands. They had the pleasure of opening for Dizzy Gillespie. If you google “Ellenville Jazz Ensemble 1982”, you can hear them and see a photo. Rick was the trumpet player on the right. So, I had to include one of his trumpets in the room as a reminder of him and the story that goes with it.\u00a0 And the leather satchel was Rick’s but I caught Maya using it to carry her homework when we were visiting my Mom. Love that!<\/p>\n

I love how painting the back of the bookcase black, completely transforms it and highlights the white accessories. The large art is from Minted and the photograph is another favourite (I guess they all are, right?) taken in Barbados.<\/p>\n

If you have been following my blog for awhile, you will know that this is my fourth ORC that I have participated in – both as a linking participant and as one of the featured designers\/bloggers. It really is a wonderful concept and I have participated over the past year and a half because a) I end up with a room that is finished and that I love b) it’s fun to be a part of the online cheer leading and camaraderie that goes with the challenge and c) gaining exposure of my work as a decorator is always a good thing – you really never know who is watching and I have been fortunate to have my ORC work featured online and in print as a result.\u00a0 So, go ahead and plan to participate in the next ORC beginning in October, 2016. You won’t regret it!<\/p>\n
