Hello,<\/p>\n

Welcome to week 5 of the One Room Challenge<\/a>.\u00a0 I am in the process of renovating my kitchen and sharing my progress online so you can follow along. I hope it inspires you to update\/renovate your kitchen if your existing kitchen is outdated, not functional, not your style or all of the above. You can catch up on my previous posts here:<\/p>\n

I’m on track to have this kitchen completed in time for the photographer this coming Monday. I must say that I love how it has turned out and it has been a joy cooking in it especially since we were without a kitchen for a few weeks and ate a lot of take out\/fast food.\u00a0 The kitchen is simple, classic and way more functional and pretty than what the previous owners had (make sure you check out the Before photos in Week 1.) I think I even like it more than my former kitchen<\/a> pictured above.<\/p>\n

So here’s what has happened since last week:<\/p>\n

The beautiful ripple fold drapes in this fabric<\/a> from JF Fabrics (linen look without the wrinkles) and sewn by Q Design<\/a> are the perfect addition to the kitchen. Installed on a simple, black ceiling mount track, they open and close easily. I recently installed shutters throughout the house but didn’t want them on the patio door like we had in our former house because they were cumbersome. I much prefer the softness that drapes bring to a utilitarian space like a kitchen. Tip: make sure you don’t have a center bracket on your rod as you won’t be able to pull the drapes all to one side which is nice to have on a patio door when you want the drapes out of the way. Also since it’s in a kitchen, choose a fabric colour that is a bit forgiving – forgo white or cream as they will get dirty in no time.<\/p>\n

\u00a0I always leave the check measure and installation of drapes to professionals as you want your drapes to just touch (or as they say in the biz, “kiss”) the floor so correct measurements are key.<\/p>\n

The sconce over the sink was installed. Kitchens require different light sources and I upgraded the lighting in the kitchen as there were only 2 ceiling mount fixtures there previously.\u00a0 My electrician added six potlights – he wanted to install 8 (don’t they always want to overdo them?) but I thought that was too many. There are also two large pendants over the island and under cabinet lighting so varied lighting for task and ambient lighting. Plus there is a huge patio door which lets in a lot of light during the day.<\/p>\n

The backsplash was just installed today. Tomorrow it will be grouted. I had considered doing a unique patterned tile but I know me and I know I would tire of it. You can never go wrong with a simple white, or in my case, off white\/light grey subway tile. They look perfect with my Silestone counter<\/a>. Did I tell you how much I love it?<\/p>\n
