Welcome to week 6 of the One Room Challenge<\/a> where I am renovating and decorating my basement and documenting the process in six<\/del> seven weekly blog posts. Typically, this would be the reveal post but because of the various natural disasters happening in the US impacting projects, Linda, the organizer has decided for the first time ever to give all of us a one week extension. The reveal post will be one week today. I can hardly wait to wrap this project up!<\/p>\n

Wallpaper:<\/strong><\/p>\n

A lot has happened since last week. The wallpaper (Schumacher’s Pyne Hollyhock in Blush<\/a>) went up and it’s just what the basement needed. I contemplated doing panel moulding but I think it would have made my low basement ceiling seem even lower. They just released the blush colourway of the wallpaper this year and I knew I had to have it somewhere in the house. (I already have the grey version in my ensuite and upper hall.) There was even enough left over to paper the area above the kitchenette cabinets. (I will save that for the reveal next week.) I had debated at length about what to do above the cabinetry – a different wallpaper? tiles? a white shelf to span the length of the cabinetry? But this actually makes more sense as now rather than having one very small wall wallpapered, I have two and the space seems more cohesive. Here is a sneak peek below.<\/p>\n

Sectional and fabric:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The sectional was delivered and I couldn’t love it any more.\u00a0 As I have mentioned, it is from Whittington & Co. <\/a>a Canadian maker of fine furniture for over 23 years. They are a trade only resource known for their quality, service, <\/span>fine craftsmanship and custom capabilities. They have even crafted furniture for Her Majesty the Queen of England which is telling of the luxury and quality. In today’s world of mass produced,”can I have it now?” products, it’s nice to know that there are still skilled artisans creating beautiful products while mastering their craft. By purchasing upholstered furniture made in Canada, we are not only supporting local businesses\/our economy but ensuring that these skills will continue to exist as long as there is demand. And that’s a good thing.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

I chose the Chelsea sectional because it is highly customizable – I could have both the size and the style I prefer. I wanted to maximize seating and only have one large piece rather than a sofa and two chairs. The sectional is 37″ deep (vs their Kensington model which is 41″ deep) which is the perfect depth for my daughter and I. I also wanted it to fit down the tight basement stairs. \ud83d\ude42 You can read about the custom sectional program here<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

These are all of the options that you have when it comes to style of the arm, back cushions, legs, stitching, seat etc. So, the Chelsea or Kensington sectional can look completely different depending on what options you choose.\u00a0 In case you’re interested, I chose slim track arms, box back cushions, 3″ block legs, double top stitching, and seat and back cushions which all have a feather blend wrap for that “sink in” comfort.<\/span>\"Vanessa

If you purchase a sectional or other upholstered piece from a retailer you are limited to a handful of fabric options. With a custom piece like this you can use any<\/strong> fabric from any distributor. I wanted something fairly neutral – it’s a large piece so a pattern or bold colour would have overwhelmed the space. I knew I wanted a “performance fabric” and this Crypton fabric from Jf Fabrics<\/a> is not only the right aesthetic I was after but it’s stain, spill and odour resistant. Crypton fabrics have been installed in major hotels, restaurants, healthcare environments, offices and other public places for good reason. The performance properties become a part of the character of the fibers themselves and it’s not simply a spray that goes on top of the fabric. I’m glad I don’t have to worry about spills and stains what with having teenagers over and of course, my puppy who I’m sure will love how comfortable it is. (This Whittington chair<\/a> is her favourite place to nap on the first floor even though she has two dog beds.) Just have to mention that the Crypton fabric is not stain proof – it is stain resistant so you still have to use good judgment and wipe up any spills\/stains right away.<\/p>\n

Doors, Paint, Art:<\/strong><\/p>\n

My Metrie Masonite Logan two panel interior doors<\/a> were installed and I had them painted in Benjamin Moore OC-27 Balboa Mist<\/a>. They are the same doors that I have throughout the house but painted white. You can read all about these doors here<\/a>. Absolutely love their simplicity.<\/p>\n
